Everest Base Camp

The Khumbu route passes Sherpa settlements, suspension bridges, rhododendron and pine forests, and high mountain terrain within Sagarmatha National Park. Everest Base Camp itself is not the highest viewpoint; many itineraries include Kala Patthar for views of Everest.

Typical itineraryOften 12–14 days from Lukla, including acclimatisation
AccessUsually fly to Lukla, weather permitting
SeasonsGenerally spring and autumn

This is a high-altitude trek. It requires gradual ascent, planned acclimatisation and flexibility for weather-related flight delays. A warm insulated layer, shell, gloves and sleeping system suitable for expected night temperatures are important.

Route duration varies with acclimatisation, weather, transport and starting point. Check current park and local entry requirements before departure.

Know before you go

  • Build in acclimatisation days; do not rush ascent.
  • Keep buffer days for Lukla flight disruptions.
  • Ask a qualified local operator about current route conditions.

Confirm current conditions and requirements with a qualified local operator before departure.
