Remote western Nepal

Dolpo & Shey Phoksundo

Dolpo is a remote region of western Nepal known for stark landscapes, high passes and Tibetan-influenced cultural traditions. Shey Phoksundo Lake is a major natural highlight, but routes beyond it can be demanding.

← All trekking regions
Highest pointHigh passes vary by itinerary; some exceed 5,000 m
Typical itineraryAbout 10 days to several weeks
AccessUsually via Nepalgunj and Juphal, subject to flight conditions
SeasonsOften late spring to autumn, route dependent

Access, permits, transport and accommodation depend strongly on the exact itinerary. Some routes are remote enough that self-sufficiency and experienced local support are essential.

Avoid assuming the whole region is one standard trek. Confirm whether your plan is a lower Dolpo route, Upper Dolpo or a shorter Phoksundo-focused trip.
